Dustbowl Pavane

Dustbowl Pavane;
in which the wheat dances

The wind begins, a breath, a sigh,
blades bend, wheat whispers brow to brow.
Clay cracks, green browns, the voices die.
The wind begins, a breath, a sigh.
The dustbound seed  is born to fly,
turned up beneath a burning plow.
The wind begins, a breath, a sigh,
blades bend, wheat whispers brow to brow

  1. Gorgeous colours you paint us pretty with in this perfect little triolet Joy, popped in to say thank you for supporting both my classes. It's been a joy to see people using this form, and fun to read all the different takes people have on the triolet!

  2. This does indeed feel like a slow court dance, which as I've just disciovered, is what a pavane is. It's lovely.

  3. This is completely beautiful, both words and image. And I love the metre! Mesmerizing.

  4. How lovely, Hedge! The wheat dancing to the wind's music. "Clay cracks" and "turned up beneath a burning plow" are just a couple of striking images in this short poem. I'm not familiar with the triolet, but you've made me fall in love with it now. I also read last week's accompanying poem. I think you did an excellent job with both poems!

  9. This had the such rhythm - a pure delight to recite, hedgewitch.

    There's something about wind through the grains - it's amazing.

  10. Very nice the way you actually conveyed the three steps of the dance with the tri-sectioned lines throughout.
