My scrabbled together 55 this week:
Smell Of A Storm
You wear again
the smell of a storm,
fumes of a dream.
Your shadow stands in smoke,
gaming the dying sun to
light your cobra eyes.
I reach out
now as I did then
before summer nights
gave their souls to snow;
this flash and bang
this show
is all of you I'll ever know
is all of you I'll ever know

Note, still having internet issues--bear with me if I take forever to get to your link. I am leaving comment moderation off so you can still read each other's if I am MIA.
Frost was like Yeats, he said poetry is our lover's quarrel with the world: And if there's only one poem and it's wrought of and with and despite what we call love, then the adder's flicker of Thanatos is holy, too. Then our separations are both mean and meant. This tender remembrance of the succubus here is shaded just as He would have it -- prescient of storm at night, near and that far. Heartbreakingly tender and lasciviously cruel; the final line has iron finality yet is so featherlight, like a final expiring breath. Even if it's just shadows boxing, you know the knockout punch is never far.
ReplyDeleteApologies if my 55 is redundant--weary week--

If Dracula were my lover, this is how I would describe him. Full drama in his aura, the sunlight never quite catching his attention...and then him always just out of reach. Rather tantalising! Hope your wifi shows its face...otherwise we'll catch up later. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI nearly forgot my 55!

Oh my gosh. It's possible that we have written the same poem, but in different words. I am sorry you are having the much annoying internet woes. That is an exercise in frustration. Anyway, I LOVE the part about the cobra eyes. Your poems are always rich with images that just blow everybody else right off the page and out the window. I also admire how you constructed the second stanza with the snow/show/know rhyme. It's always a real pleasure to read what you summon up.

ReplyDeleteThanks, everyone, for your most generous comments. This poem was a quick scrawl from a dream for me, on the fly in the midst of my current chaos--I'm very pleased to see the response. AFA the internet, it is driving me nuts. It works flawlessly for hours, and then goes out like a snuffed candle, and refuses to return for hours. I am almost to the point of calling the mindless robots at AT&T, which indicates the level of desperation here.
ReplyDeleteI've managed to stay online long enough for these first entries--to those coming after, bear with me if I am slow to get there.

ReplyDeleteYour image is beautiful, a red hot storm! And I think this is my favorite of your 55's.

The dance between heat and cold is so intense and real, especially in the end. As is the burn is raw, and then all that cold is splashed on the hurt. Hurting and hurting, while starting and feeling so much cold. All that "snow". *shivers*
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I laughed (and bit nervously) when I saw the heat and storm in your poem. I'm glad I didn't read it before I wrote mine. Or, I might not have been sure if I stole some of your poem's feelings or not.
DeleteI never like to read anyone else's before I write, but I don't think you could get much more out of my images than the ones you carry with you, dear Magaly. I loved your storm of passion. Thanks so much for helping the weekend kick a bit of ass.

ReplyDeleteOh my. Oh my my. This is my new face of yours. "You wear again the smell of a storm..." .Infuckingcrrdible. I want to steal this line so badly and to write one of my Dorian Gray poems with it. I want this lover to come out of the storm and steal me.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much--so glad you liked it. And thanks for your excellent 55.
DeleteThe 55 is closed for the week. Many thanks to all who came by to share their words, to read and to express the hope that a kickass weekend can still be had.
