Sun Kiss
The sun was on me
that day.
It came
through the bars
selfless as my
grandmother's kiss;
clover mead light,
sweet on the lips
of winter's dead dream.
I turned my back
on the itching of buses.
I forgot
the black lilies
spearing frozen worlds,
nova'd stars.
Promises overflowed
the bottles of my eyes.
For a moment
I even tasted
the blackberry vintage
of you
decanted before me,
then dust
once again.

This made me cry. From the selfless kiss of a grandmother to the black lilies to the beautiful, heart-wrenching final two stanzas, this is just IT, dear BFF. I don't what else I can say except that it is wonderful to see you post something again, let alone something as fine as this.
ReplyDeleteSun Kiss .... wonderful to read your poetry again. Like Shay said, this is an emotional piece that tugs at the heart. Happy Weekend, Joy.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to read a poem from you again. This one goes straight to my heart. I am riding an emotional roller coaster and not sure when I will be riding on smiles or tears.
ReplyDeletepowerful writing!
ReplyDeletedecanted before me,
ReplyDeletethen dust once again
He will continually try to right things up before you but it will happen again and again. He has to be guided in things he does with lots of patience. Thoughtful take Joy!

Such gorgeous writing, Joy. It is always lovely to read you. This poem is especially fine.
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. This poem just warms me.
ReplyDeleteYou find the universe in a bottle. Each line weighted, balanced between the sky and the dust. Your portrayal - your illumination - of loss in these few sketched words informs us more than could a thousand pages. I am glad, nonetheless, to read you, and them.
ReplyDeleteYou have captured a moment as only a great poet could Joy! Each line full with imagery that both spans a lifetime of memories and a brief moment in time. The line "selfless as my grandmother's kiss' really knocked me off my feet! Simply amazing poetry! I am so happy you joined us this week Joy, and that you are writing again! 🤩
ReplyDeleteOK!!! You busted out your spare, clean, and vibrant language in bittersweet perfection. I was getting warmed up with "clover mead light", but then bam! "I turned my back / on the itching of buses." That's fantastic. And "the black lilies / spearing frozen worlds." Yes, both you and I saw a darkness in those spikes. As well "I even tasted / the blackberry vintage / of you." Yet for all the warmth, the dark tide you foreshadowed pulls us back to the dead dream.
ReplyDelete"I even tasted
ReplyDeletethe blackberry vintage
of you
decanted before me,
then dust
once again."
Your use of language is spectacular. I love this!
this just beautiful Joy, this feels like powerful memory here, and then dust once again, that really choked me
