City of the Mind

Bruxelles Musée Magritte

City of the Mind

Give me
a  page of night's
black stardazzle,  splash
across some buttermilk moon, and
you win.

Boxes
physical, imaginary;
so messy carving off
parts so people
will fit.

This is my attempt at a mirror cinquain. (one cinquain of lines of 2,4,6,8 and 2 syllables  and its reverse.) Kerry O'Connor will explain it all to you at the link above.

Visitation

Visitation

Sleeping deep
deep in your brown eyes
rocking in the dance
don’t be afraid
I said
cupping your face above me
you smiled and looked down
full and flawless
and
between us
I saw there was
no fear
at last as you rolled
with
that antic motion
turned immaculate
in and through  me
no fear
though you’ve been dead
bien-aimée, âme perdue
these nineteen years
and so have I
until
just now.

Robber's Rest

Robber’s Rest

Into the scruboak woods
you drove us
down the vanishing ledge
cut into the side of the creekbank
along the red sandy rim
until the road began to narrow
and play out.

“Stop! Stop!” I yelled but you drove on,
till the truck slid down the hill on splayed
wheels, like a dog on ice whose legs
fly out from under it
down to the weedy bottom
as darkness fell on
no way back

You walked off, shadow long
over the sucking sand
to look for a place to fish
(because you don’t, among other
things, hunt any more;
when you came back from
Nam you said it was
the deer’s dead eye
made you put down the gun)

I wandered into the woods
hearing a singing
where no one was
came upon the outlaw hideout
abandoned, ramshackle
in the dusk, broken walls of
round pocked cauliflower teeth
glowing like white headstones
in the graveyard of love
where I finally found
a candle
and a bed.

Friday Flash 55 ~ Bead Work

Bead Work

Love isn’t measured in
sneezes from ragweed kisses
in  moments or hours
all black or white.
It’s a  handworked hide,
spirit canvas
stitched in sinew
dyed in heartblood
shrunk with spleen
chewed by dulled teeth
beaded complete
with patience and art,
sewn for robes
soft and warming
that may or
may not
fit.

After much searching through the dusty archives of the hedgewitchian vault deep below the castle, fighting zombie spiders and stuff, I  finally unearthed this artifact. Only for you, Galen.

The Cambion's Tale

The Cambion's Tale

The north wind is in the wildwood
tonight, calling the last
specklings of summer’s regret
from the moondripping trees,
fragmented friable tongues of
henna and ochre lost to a dusty haze
that blots future and past, dead voices
rustling the song that calls me to you
my hell born babe, heart’s delight
soul’s inquistor.

Changeling and woodwose
furred with frosted moss and mist
horned with bone, poised always
to run; you regard me blinkless,
hermetic as a wild thing, gaze of
opals burning through the veil where
I pretend to be protected invisible
as Niniane, everlost instead
fate-tangled and resistless to
the beckon of that blue unicorn eye.

So I come out of the night
for your lichen'd kiss, rain
cold, full of the taste of rust
yet sweeter than any vintage
pressed from the sun's full flaunt. We're
as fallen as Rome remembered, love,
all my smooth green weight leaning
on the colonnade of whispers
you unbury from the
heart’s shallow grave.

My breath is gone again.
You’ve whistled for it; obedient
hound of my hollowed lungs it lopes,
leashed in your  brimstone binding
tighter than the chest that
knows the next gasp is last.
The night wind blows hellfire
around us where the idol burns,
fading sandalwood smoke
bolted with blood, spiced with loss.

O there’s nothing wrong with us
that reincarnation won’t cure.

cambion: According to the Malleus Maleficarum, the offspring of a human male and a succubus, or a human female and an incubus. Caliban and Merlin are both assigned this dubious distinction.
woodwose, or wodewose: " (also wildman or wild man of the woods...)is a mythical figure that appears in the artwork and literature of medieval Europe, comparable to the satyr or faun type in classical mythology..."~wikipedia

*The last two lines are extrapolated from an old saying passed around in the 60's.

Tea with The Old Ones

Tea with The Old Ones

There’s a knock at the door
who wants to come in
to this lodge on the cliff
built from diamonds and sin,

from feathers and seashells
from fishtails and farewells,
but the door's locked and bolted
and the kettle’s just on.

Walk up the path something
cut in the cliff;
the luck’s with the young
but they don’t make this trip.

Peer in the window
at the apple green firelight.
You might see a woman
stooped by the midnight,

or a ripple, a shadow
a trick of the moonglow
a face drawn on water
blue lit from below.

Is it tea that she’s drinking,
Is it real that she’s winking?
Or is the room empty
and  everyone gone?

Some leave
without asking.
Some stay
for the tasking

and some stay to sup,
but for tea
with the Old Ones
you need your own cup.

Revenant

In honor of the forthcoming holiday, my all time favorite, Halloween, I'm reposting the third post I ever made at Verse Escape. It's one of my old poems, unrevised from 1991, the last year in which I wrote poetry before starting this blog, which turns one year old on the 16th of this month. (This was also the first post I submitted to One Shot Wednesday at the Old One Stop Poetry.)

Burne-Jones-le-Vampire

Revenant

The cool breath of the dead sighs down the hall.
It peels my soul like an old potato,
thick slices of skin and soft woody flesh
dropping in a spiral on the kitchen table of this
tired life.

A speaking shadow stands at the door,
an empty replicant.
A grey curse hangs over him
like the sullenness of unshed rain
blowing past a withering crop.

Huddled in the closed grave of my bed
I compose my bones in paleolithic repose
with dry flowers, an awl of horn,
a broken string of red beads
       drifted with earth,
waiting for the ending of that next birth.

O I hear you out there,
rapping, knocking, calling
with a mute vibration
begging to come in and have me.

O yes I answered last time and see
See me now.

Roll the rock and stop the door.
Put the holy symbol round my neck.
Only keep
    the shadow
                  out.

Musical Interlude~Sunday Night Blues

Yeah well--sometimes it's just like that. These are the strains echoing through the halls and cracking the stones in the walls at Castle Hedgewitch tonight.

She's playin my song:

A little of the old Steely Dan

Lots of Santana I like, but this one fits tonight, cause
there's a monster
under my bed:

Back to our regularly scheduled poetry soon.
