The Star
I wrote this for you when
you were the star in my heart
to give back light for light
as we traveled time's tempest
bemused.
Who knew then
you were the last;
last star before the sunrise,
last ghost spun
from the broken wheel

Oh this is so great, love the last lines, the last star before sunrise... so much in 44 words
ReplyDeleteYour poem lifts so nicely, then takes us to those last few lines...the sting....really superb - a poem to read again for the arc it takes...wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOhhhh! THIS:
ReplyDelete"last ghost spun
from the broken wheel"
Fantastic.
Gorgeous, gorgeous write! Sigh 💝💝
ReplyDelete"last ghost spun from a broken wheel" - that's a wonderful line.
ReplyDeleteJoy, you got my attention with the image you chose. It reminds me of a brain with the trees as synapses. Your poem spins me up then lays me down in a cushion of tears.
ReplyDeleteWho knew.... Who ever knows, eh?
ReplyDeleteWonderful quad. Thanks
Indeed, we never know, do we? Just as we never--or certainly very rarely--know in the instant of meeting someone that that person will be important to us. The meat wheel in the sky is terse, mysterious, and does as it will. On the other hand, if we knew, what would we do differently? This one was a heart-tugger.
ReplyDeleteyou were the last;
ReplyDeletelast star before the sunrise,
Love the feelings of discovery that led to some good moments. Sometimes things can work out right when we have designs of wanting it. Best wishes to the ensuing year, Joy!

Beautiful yet haunting words, especially those last lines. Nicely done quadrille.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, yet haunting and a part of me feels the words from a broken place.
ReplyDeleteChilling quadrille.. The inspiration we give others, as I have been called "muse" but knew that light would be fleeting. How can a person be our muse without it ending in the appearance of ghosts. Haunting to me still.
ReplyDelete"last ghost spun
ReplyDeletefrom the broken wheel"
Gorgeous imagery, with a mood that lingers is is it haunts?
"you were the last;
ReplyDeletelast star before the sunrise"
Lovely lines. :)
I am aging through an entire series of "lasts." Some I welcome, others I do not, which in my mind is acceptable. If only we were vampyres.

This quadrille shines in its poignant beauty. Haunting words, beautiful imagery.
ReplyDeleteYour quadrille seems like it's going to be so uplifting, and then turns so sad, a remarkable write in such a short form.
ReplyDelete"to give back light for light."
ReplyDeletethis is tight joy, not word wasted and smooth, very nice
ReplyDeleteThanks,man. Just some short form stuff to keep my hand in.
DeleteA 44 still stamped in the dance but lit ghostly as the morning star. Now we learn to sing by the light of the half-life. It reveals much about the wheel which spins words -- who knows, maybe all ... All my dreams are now scuppered from dead places, running about on 44 times 44 shoes.
ReplyDeleteYes, dead places have a way of demanding our attention--for healing, for cleansing, or perhaps just to understand the cycle. In the way that writing is talking as much to ourselves as the Other. Thanks for reading, B. and thanks for keeping the shoes in play.
Delete"to give back light for light." Just beautiful, Joy :-)
