Soldier

Soldier

I am a soldier pledged to the sky, become
a sword in her blue pockets, my threadbare fatigues
marked with the grit of worlds. I fight on
because she wears time so much better than I
and vaults the earth with her mother-colored mantle
unwavering, unchanged, uncommanded forever.

Tho Night has drawn his obsidian blade
and pierced me with his heartkiller spear, tho I
am older, diminished, my moondrops that pooled on
white grass all drunk in the sun's tarnished cup; tho
I howl my warcry unheard in the inkwell dark,
still the hole in my breast

is soft-closed with moss and silver straw
and silence that seeps out
from the green forest floor,
til dreams and signs pillow my head
and swim like sweet fish as pale as winter
through the tears on my war-stained cheeks.

Earthbound Fish

Earthbound Fish

It wants to fly
it does
or at least swim
but melancholy never made
a path to waves or sky
any more than
Escher's tessellations made
a living
school of fish. They only made
wallpaper
or a fish-dance of replicated cells
that might be somehow the
mute components
of a self-eating brain.

It needs wings
that want to be brushes,
that will refresh the distempered
canvas from black
to floating clouds.
Feathers are only clouds, after all,
air things clipped and pressed
into Icarus-wax,
so why not?
But the paint is caked and dry,
feather-breaking,
and the staggered beating
 like an old heart
that stumbles itself into silence.

Meanwhile ten thousand starlings
live in their moving mosaic,
a matrix of cloud,
a canvas
of pure flight
from earthdark to light;

it wants it wants
 so much
to fly.

Century Song

 Century Song

For a hundred years
it seems
I've waited here, wasted here,
full of parch and motion, a salty throat
from drinking too much ocean once
though it's been
no more than a lifetime
or a breath

held under a thousand passing thrones
of aqua-green
where I counted days as quicksilver fish,
as coral bones, marked each dagger flashed in
mouths of sharks, each scale, each whale
singing to all her kin while I
I drowned alone.

For a century
it seems
I trod this water milling, to breathe the years I knew
still held the spark,
the flowers' poppy dream, the moths unflamed,
the coyote's bark
longing for the moongleam
on your reaching arms.

For a century
or two
the heat is master;
the dust that birthed you,
the sun that calls you on.
It blisters me as the freeze of aeons
boils a distant steam, until night's mantle

falls across the blaze, and in the end perhaps,
too many too-bright ghosts and burning days
earn me a last cool breeze

a breeze and a flashing of that dream

where you
come back for me.
