Tiger Eyes

Tiger Eyes

Do you like a candle,
lovestruck
you said,
or in the dark? Whichever
you prefer,
so willing an exchange,
my customs for yours,
letting me see
your ageless face change
forward-framed
in a spiderweb nimbus
our slick fingers chained,
your tiger-eyes close,
flecked tawny hot
in the horrible not,
there to defy
the burst night of youth,
seeming to know
all I never found out,
lit with the want
of what couldn't be had.

Challenge: Get Listed
Grapeling (it could be that) provides us with some photographic images of,and emergence from, the larval form, and a sharp, succinct word list, both of which I have made use of here. For full details see toads link above.

Never the Bride

Never The Bride

Another morning
rueful with clouds
as Spring wanders through,
resigned as any working girl
to one more cog and gear john year.

What's her gypsy wage? What silver
crosses her tulip pink palm?
She spreads a thaw
rioting with flowers,
makes every male and female thing
her fool

only to see dry summer
get the wedding
while she's left forgotten
in her white dust veil.
No one stops and waits
for a girl who's on the road.

A little something for Spring, (after a brief conversation on that subject with Walt Whitman and Mark Kerstetter, of
The Mockingbird Sings--thanks for the inspiration, Mark.)

Dreaming of Light Equipment

#60 Castle of pallets
Dreaming of Light Equipment

The best sex
I never had
was in the little room behind the
redneck bar.

You left the greenhouse early.
You said Charles could do your work,
your feral smile crouched in the
shadow of your black beard.

Under the faux-chenille covers
our bodies barely touched
as you put
the machine in gear.

I was bracing for your
spring-loaded kiss
when the boy came in
with his little dog,

opened the window through
fluttering american flag curtains
and sat on the sill, talking and looking
feverishly for the clown car's coming.

We couldn't make him leave.
The father, in  brown-pintoed apron, sidled
through the door that wouldn't lock and said
since the cops had done the bust

the boy had lost control.
It took hours to get rid of them.
I checked--the door still wouldn't lock.
I flipped a living mobious strip

of light switches,
watched one bulb
die as the other came on--
a  machinegun monotony of annoyance.

I couldn't find the plug to pull
on the radio--talk radio--and the
woman's vulpine voice victimed
on and on--

but your body, Mike
was more beautiful than a silver trout
in a midnight blue creek,
I do remember that

shining with white inviolate light
in the uncontrollable night.
I wore a flowered halter--
you stood behind me in the mirror

and slipped it off,
your hands as smooth on the straps
as on the levers of your skid loader
where you routinely would drop

a dozen pallets on a pile
as uniform, as aligned
as a stack of pringles in a virgin tube
Every so often as

you measured my length against yours,
hydraulic waves would flutter my lids
and my eyes roll back involuntarily,
an ecstatic irritant because

I badly wanted to see how it was done.
O Mike, if I'd only known
how smooth, how hot your skin, how deep
the sanctuary

under the camouflage, the
erasure of your work clothes--
I would never have
married that loser.

Basket of Berries

Basket of Berries

When I was a peach
they stood in line to split me.
My sweetness spangled their chins.

When I was champagne,
they stood in line to toast me.
My slipper overflowed their little brains.

When I was a basket of berries
they fought like cats to juice me,
to suckle up a fool's Cointreau.

Now that I'm a stone
it's logical they've left me;
they didn't come to build, after all.

Fool in Blue

Silent Night

Fool in Blue

Being Shiloh’s fool
was one of the most
peaceful things.
Oh he never thought
to call her that,
just a blue-cornered woman
with too many empty nights,
a vacuum
it was his nature to fill
in the two AM hot

Oklahoma vapor lock,
scratching on her windowscreen,
come to town for the thrill.
Sitting in the disappearing room
they’d get high and talk, drink cheap Zin--
always the best wine to go with cheap sin,
if you happen to believe in sin--
while his old lady finally got
a good night's sleep. Being Shiloh's fool
was a peaceful thing.

She knew him for all
he was worth;
runaway country boy,
too smart homegrown freak,
aging acidhead.
(Ate a whole sheet of blotter once
he'd stashed and forgot;
thought it was too old and
he might not get off,
but he misjudged.

Composed himself to die
on the dining room table
for two days and nights
while the party held a wake.
He was surprised as anybody
when he came down
like a busted windowshade
and had to
go back to class.)

Being Shiloh’s fool
was a restful thing
up to a point.
She knew her purpose
and he knew his.
That night she broke,
he drove her to his dad’s pond
took off her china doll clothes,
led her into the black water
where salt tears and sweat rolled

invisible as water moccasins in the dark
dancing their poison tango,
washed her in owlsong and moon
till her body whispered to her
she still had a heart.

Shiloh never owned her,
no one ever owned him,
and she,
she's never owned
anything.

This one has been in the files forever, and I think it's as free from any rhyme or contrivance of meter as anything I've every written, so, with apologies for the length, I submit it.
