Odin's Mead

 Odin's Mead

 I am not a jewel
fashioned for your collection
nor the paint-pot
for your ever-moving lips,
not the fertility
to your futility
not assumed erudition
to your chosen perdition.

I am not meant for
your wound of a mouth
bleeding hate-kindling for fire-hags
flaming sweet summer-country,
not the heart-stake
vitriol will make,
not victory to be claimed
in a war too dirty to name.

I'm only the last
taste in the drinking horn
of some bright thing Other
a soft-foot step and fleet hand
pouring drunken snow
brewed by Ones who go
on spirit bones far stronger
but here walk free no longer.

I am only the bite
of the berry
dropping seeds from the bramble,
a tart taste in a season
of falling farewells,
a sapphire flicker
brief in the blue mirror,
 a gesturing ghost's fever
behind you forever;

a thrum too low to be clear
that only the silenced can hear.

Note: I've recounted this myth before, but briefly to recap, in Norse mythology, the Poetic Mead or Mead of Poetry is a magical beverage made from the murdered body of a being created from the gods' spit which sealed the truce of the Aesir-Vanir war, and was stolen from the  jötnar guarding it by Odin in eagle form, who spits it out into sacred  golden vessels for those chosen by the gods. Whoever drinks from these is given the gifts of poetry and knowledge, and is transformed into a skald and scholar. Odin also releases some of the mead in his droppings as he flies. This anyone can drink, and is called 'the rhymester's share."

The Bastard

"Hey babe, what's in your eyes?
I saw them flashing like airplane lights.
...What's that laughing in your smile?
...If that's your love, just leave me blind..."
~Jagger-Richards, You Got The Silver

The Bastard

It wasn't enough
performing for the
shell-game professors
and small-time grocers
you called family.
O no.

It wasn't enough
to scrub your drawers,
peel your cow's-tongue,
wait graveyard tables
to feed the child.
O no,

you had to call me
'an authoress.'

A bastard could never
belong in your world
unless it was you.

The Tumbleweed Maker

The Tumbleweed Maker

You are the thing that
makes the tumbleweed,
the thing that consuming,
consumes itself.

Not the snake but the fire,
not the mirrored serpent but
the serpent in the mirror,
not the rain, ever,

but forever
the dustbowl wind
that takes everything loose and light
breaks what tries to stand

that    pushes              pushes
pushes
to have its way
then getting it,
                             sighs away.

I hide from the sun
you pull out
to smile benignly
dripping gold on yesterday's wreck

while trusting flowers come,
tumbleweeds sway in greengold balls
the cat lolls on his back
forgetting to crunch up the doves

and things seem--
O
just
fine--

until the smile
opens its can of hell,
curls leaves, drops flowers as
the panting cat thins in parched dust

where
the warped wall,
the emptied weed
the hiding heart

are light and loose and broken
ready for you,
the black wind
that blows it all away.

Flashback~No One Remembers Anything Least of All This

Flashback
No One Remembers Anything Least of All This

Do we find the cost of freedom
buried in the ground?
~Stephen Stills

It doesn't matter how high
the white dove flies.
The downplummet fall
is determined by
gunpowder and blood.

Where war meets money
there are only
unequal equations
and the black
hole sucksounds
of mouths
without wings.

The Faun

The Faun

Through
 the leaf crackle
I followed the faun
from the red hollow
of the sleeper's dawn
to the dusk's clearing
of the missed trees
in the deep woods of
what used to be.

On his brown forehead
he wore seven stars.
On his root-wrists were
 my own shackle scars.
The smile on his face
candled off and on:
warm and loving,
vanished,
gone.

He dimmed and guttered
his grey foglight flame;
the sigh of his death-breath
was the call of my name
to out-see the blue sail
of the moon's shadow raft.

I danced alone in the clearing ;
the old gods laughed.

Weekend Challenge:Live A Little
"People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our..experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality; so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive."
~Joseph Campbell
The ever-incandescent Fireblossom asks us to write of our passions--this poem contains several of mine.

Sidenote: Corot is most known for his landscapes, but he also painted many women over his prolific, five-decade plus career; all of them, even the little girls, have this same remote and ancient gaze.

A Love Song for Troubled Girls

Got Them Cosmic Silver Blues Again, Mama

Coal Black and Silver Blue
went walking after midnight
Coal say,' Blue, baby,
Things they just ain't right.
We should be Queens
We should have limosines
We should own the machines
Why for all these clownshoes
be fuckin with dynamite?

We could blow this town open
our powder's so dry
but we can't get a light
never mind a piece of the pie.'
Blue say, 'Girl I so hear what you say.'
an she picked up her dobro and began to play:

Silver Blue's Love Song for Troubled Girls

Baby don' go
Don' go again please.
It makes me cry, and it makes me wheeze,
Makes me sing the blues when
I'm really mad as hell.
Baby please don' go, and I'll never tell.

Baby come back
Baby come back please.
I'll buy you a new hat and a dipped Tastee Freeze.
I'll dress you in red and
undress you in black.
I'll sing you that tune if you'll only come back

Baby go 'way,
Go away from me please.
Don't want your true lies, don't want your disease.
Your engine blew out,

you took my last dime
Baby go way and stay gone this time.
